In it he solemnly charges the younger man, In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season. Now Timothy was a preacher and this injunction is addressed to him in that capacity. This is a word to preachers and I will try to listen to it. But this is not only a message for preachers. It is for us all. We must As Peter puts it in one of his letters, Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. Many of us manage to talk about God, and our relationship with Christ, at good times. At the best of times when our faith is strong, or when we are in the mood or whatever. There is a saying, You dont fight fires when you are ready for them. It means that fires start at inconvenient times and in places that you do not expect. The fire-fighter must go when and where he or she is called. You do not choose where to fight a fire. Timothy was told Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season. The Christian must be ready to speak of Christ in season and out of season. The Christian must love their neighbour even though they are tired and have had a bad day at work. The Christian must be generous to the poor even though it is nearing the end of the week or month as the case may be. We serve Jesus Christ, in season and out of season. Isnt it true? Someone needs your help or a listening ear just at the time when you are busy and cant be bothered. You have an opportunity to witness to your faith by what you say someone asks you something but you shy away from telling them about Jesus because the time is not right. But when will the time be right? When will the moment be auspicious or opportune? What exactly are we waiting for: better weather? If not now, when? If you will not speak of Jesus who will? We must be ready to speak about Jesus Christ in season and out of season. Being ready and willing at any time is the example that Jesus himself has set for us. Jesus made time for children at the end of a busy day. Although his disciples first reaction was to send the children away, Jesus famously told them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. His disciples tried to chase the children away, not because they didnt like children, but because it was the end of a busy day. They knew Jesus was tired and were trying to protect him. We have all heard of this incident and when it is told the disciples are somehow cast as the villains. They are portrayed as uncaring and intolerant. Nothing could be further from the truth. They were concerned for Jesus. It would have been easy for Jesus to say, I am tired, bring them back tomorrow. But he did not do that. He reached out to bless the world in season and out of season. We do not just serve Jesus Christ when we feel like it. Jesus Christ is Lord. He is not a toy, a pastime or a hobby to be lifted and laid as it suits us. Jesus Christ is Lord. The Christian life is not always one which is comfortable and easy. Listen to the words Paul uses of his own life. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. This was not a description of a life which was cosy and trouble-free. Do you think for a minute that these things did not require courage, determination and sacrifice? Paul warns Timothy, the time will come when [people] will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. For Timothy as a preacher and evangelist the world will not be an easy place. It had not been an easy place for Paul. It had not even been an easy place for Jesus. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Why do we expect that the world will be an easy place for us? In season and out of season we must fight the good fight, run the race and keep the faith. When that is hard we must not give up. When it is inconvenient we must press on. Imagine the scene. A 6 year old boy is running in the school sports. He has a look of determination on his face. As he glances to the right and to the left he thinks that, just possibly, he is winning(. Why does he run so hard? Its not really because of the pack of fruit pastels that he will get. No. He would run as hard even if he did not like fruit pastels. He runs as he does because he enjoys the race. Although in some senses it is harder than just standing around it is much more satisfying. That is why he runs the race. He runs because he sees his mother with her beaming smile. He can almost feel her joy and pride at his effort. He wants to please her and is succeeding in doing so. Paul felt just like that. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. He felt the warmth of Gods love. He knew the joy of feeling that the Father was pleased with him. He was straining towards the finishing line with hope and expectation. Over the last few weeks we have been looking at Pauls 2nd Letter to Timothy. This letter was written some time around 64AD just before the great fire of Rome, when Paul was in prison in Rome. In all probability Paul was martyred in Rome about 67, and 2ndTimothy was probably the last letter he wrote from jail. A number of Pauls letters in the New Testament were written from Rome where he was first of all under house arrest and later in jail awaiting almost certain death. In Gods providence Paul being imprisoned gave him time and opportunity to write these letters which have become so important. Up until that point Paul had been dashing about here and there driven by the urgency of the gospel message. Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved These letters from prison show us something of the attitude with which he faced death. For Paul rather than being an unwelcome full stop at the end of life death is a reward and a great adventure. It is obvious from this letter that Paul knew that his end was near. For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown In the Christian view death is not a failure, it is not merely the inevitable end of life. Death is a passing from this world of shadows into the light of glory. (Psalm 23) David, in the very well known words of Psalm 23, says that the great God who has been with him in life will be with him even in the valley of the shadow of death. He pictures heaven as a great banquet. That was a common image of heaven both in the Old Testament and also, for example, in some of Jesus parables. David also pictures God anointing his head with oil. In his culture the honoured guest would be anointed with fragrant oil. In the Old Testament certain important people were anointed on behalf of God. Anointing in that context signified holiness being set apart from society and dedicated to God. In the Old Testament kings, priests, prophets, and, in the prophesy of Isaiah, the promised preacher of good news to the poor, were all anointed. It was a sign of great honour. It was a sign of Gods special blessing. Indeed the word Messiah originally meant, Gods anointed One. So when David in this Psalm says, You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. It is a picture of Gods favour and approval. The great banquet and the overflowing cup are pictures of heaven as a place where all our needs are met. In much the same way the New Testament uses a picture of a city where the streets are paved with gold and the foundation stones are precious jewels. There is no shortage of anything in heaven. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. The Psalm concludes with certainty and an unshakable faith, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. That is what Paul had. He had the same unwavering faith in God. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that dayand not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 1 Peter 3:15 Mark 10:14f Acts 16:31 2 Samuel 2:4 Exodus 28:41 1 Kings 19:16 Isaiah 61:1 Revelation 21 2 Timothy 4:1-8 (Psalm 23) Page PAGE 1 u4 D 02/08/09 ) * 2 3 O ¶k_SG;Gh|CJOJQJ^Jh=wCJOJQJ^Jh*CJOJQJ^Jhh56CJ8jhh0J56B*CJU_H nH phtH +hh56B*CJ_H nH phtH hCJOJQJ^JhfYsCJOJQJ^JhfYshNz856CJ+hfYshNz856B*CJ_H nH phtH h^CJOJQJ^JhNz8hNz8CJH*OJQJ^JhNz8CJOJQJ^J* + 2 3 R S Z k x&' & Fdhgdi pd^pgdi$pd^pa$gdi$pdh^pa$gdip^pgdi pdh^pgdiO S Y Z j k W wx345۶rfZfDf:hPOJQJ^J+hfYsh256B*CJ_H nH phtH hPCJOJQJ^Jh2CJOJQJ^J+hfYshM8056B*CJ_H nH phtH hM80CJOJQJ^JhfYsh:156CJ+hfYsh:156B*CJ_H nH phtH h:1h:1CJOJQJ^J+h:156B*CJOJQJ\]^JphT1h:1h:156B*CJOJQJ\]^JphTh:1CJOJQJ^J'45#$NOGvwqrdhgdi$pdh^pa$gdip^pgdi dh^gdi pdh^pgdi#$1MO(GwprҼҟ}yu}_S}G;}h@6OCJOJQJ^Jh2CJOJQJ^Jh@6Ohc56CJ+h@6Oh@6O56B*CJ_H nH phtH hPhchcCJOJQJ^J+hfYshP56B*CJ_H nH phtH 8jhPh|0J56B*CJU_H nH phtH +hPhP56B*CJ_H nH phtH +hPh|56B*CJ_H nH phtH hPCJOJQJ^Jh|CJOJQJ^JGHmRSmnj pdh^pgdi$pdh^pa$gdip^pgdir(GH6X޼xiZA1hKkjhKkj56B*CJOJQJ\]^JphTh:1hNz8CJOJQJ^Jh@6Oh@6OCJOJQJ^Jhih@CJOJQJ^J+hihi56B*CJ_H nH phtH %hi56B*CJ_H nH phtH hiCJOJQJ^Jh@6Oh@6O56CJ+h@6Oh@6OB*CJ\]_H nH phtH +h@6Oh@6O56B*CJ_H nH phtH h@6OCJOJQJ^JXYSmn!ijʴyfZNBN6N2*2hhH*hh|CJOJQJ^Jh2CJOJQJ^JhNz8CJOJQJ^JhKkjCJOJQJ^J%hNz8hKkj56B*CJ\]phT+hNz8hKkj56B*CJ_H nH phtH +hNz856B*CJOJQJ\]^JphThNz8hNz8CJOJQJ^J+hKkj56B*CJOJQJ\]^JphT1hKkjhKkj56B*CJOJQJ\]^JphT7 jJhKkjhKkj56B*CJOJQJ\]^JphTjJK7 8 l m y!z!T"U"""#?$@$q%&&&$pdh^pa$gdip^pgdi pdh^pgdidhgdihj7 8 i j k l 2!x!z!S"T""#5####xlVJF::h'lvCJOJQJ^JhPh'lvh56CJ+h'lvh56B*CJ_H nH phtH hiCJOJQJ^Jh zCJOJQJ^Jhh56CJ2jh0J56B*CJU_H nH phtH +hh56B*CJ_H nH phtH %h56B*CJ_H nH phtH h'`DhCJH*OJQJ^J h'`DhCJOJQJ^JaJhCJOJQJ^J#>$@$E$v$$p%q%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%&(&R&Z&b&c&j&k&&&&&&&'''D(͠蠲Ͳ貔"h'lvh'lv56CJ_H nH tH hwCJOJQJ^J#jh'lv0JCJOJQJU^JhwhwCJOJQJ^JhiCJOJQJ^JhwhCJOJQJ^JhCJOJQJ^Jh'lvCJOJQJ^Jh.XCJOJQJ^J.&&&D(E(((()`)a)#*$*%*&*'*(*)*dhgdidhgdi$ Odh7$8$H$^Oa$gdi$pdh^pa$gdi pdh^pgdip^pgdi$ dh7$8$H$^ `a$gdiD(E(((((()))5)_)`)a)#*&*'*(*ĸxlhd`NB6hCJOJQJ^JhlCJOJQJ^J"h2h256CJ_H nH tH hh2hlh'lvh'lv56CJ+h'lvh'lv56B*CJ_H nH phtH "h'lvh'lv56CJ_H nH tH h'lvCJOJQJ^Jh.XCJOJQJ^Jh.Xh.X56CJ2jh20J56B*CJU_H nH phtH +h.Xh.X56B*CJ_H nH phtH h2CJOJQJ^J)***+*:*H*U*d*s*******************$a$gd $da$gddhgdi(*+*,*:*;*H*I*U*V*d*e*s*t*****̵v_N_N_N_N7-jh2h20JCJOJQJU^JaJ h'lvh'lvCJOJQJ^JaJ-jh'lvh'lv0JCJOJQJU^JaJ&hhCJOJQJ\]^JaJ3jhh0JCJOJQJU\]^JaJ h|h|CJOJQJ^JaJ-jh|h|0JCJOJQJU^JaJ hPhCJOJQJ^JaJ-jhPh0JCJOJQJU^JaJh^CJOJQJ^J****************************²socWoKh^CJOJQJ^Jh^CJOJQJ^JhCJOJQJ^Jh^h^>*B*OJQJ^Jph"h^0J>*B*OJQJ^Jph!hv$0JOJQJ^JmHnHuh^0JOJQJ^Jjh^0JOJQJU^Jh^OJQJ^JhKkjOJQJ^JhhOJQJ^Jjhv$Uhv$ h2h2CJOJQJ^JaJ***dhgdi,1h.
